Risks Of Urinary Infections During Pregnancy (UTI)

Risks Of Urinary Infections During Pregnancy (UTI)

What actually is UTI?

Urinary Infection during pregnancy or UTI is the infection in any of the parts of the urinary system, be it kidneys, ureters, bladder or the urethra. While women are most susceptible for urinary infections than men, it is also more common in women who are pregnant.

While you're pregnant and your fetus is growing inside descending pressure on the urinary bladder you might experience urine leaks causing perineal infection. Discomfort in hygiene due to a short urethra (usually 3-4 cm) and an already distended pregnant belly can lead to urinary tract infections.

Is urinary infection during pregnancy dangerous?

UTIs occur among 2-10% of pregnant women leading to the risk of premature childbirth. Severe UTIs can cause permanent damage to the organs. Labor and delivery with urinary infection can affect the baby and the mother.

Risks with UTIs during pregnancy

Women in their pregnancy are high on hormones with high sugar and proteins in their urine, these changes put them at a higher risk of infections.

Besides, a reflux condition in which the urine happens to flow back to the kidneys also leads to UTI.

To make matters worse, the expanding belly makes it easier for the intestinal bacteria sitting on your skin and your gastrointestinal tract to get into your urinary tract causing UTI.

Women involved in high sexual activity during pregnancy are also prone to UTIs on a high level.

How do you know if you are infected?

Here are some signs to watch out for during pregnancy to check if you have an infection. If you experience any of the following symptoms, please visit your doctor immediately.

  • You want to urinate frequently
  • You get a burning sensation while you pee
  • Fever
  • Lower back pain
  • Your urine looks cloudy or it smells
  • You feel pukish or nauseated

What can you do to prevent getting urinary infection during pregnancy?

As always, prevention is better than cure, this is what you can do :

  • Keep your system hydrated and drink water often
  • Avoid using public restrooms that are not clean
  • Keep your intimate area dry, moisture can be a breeding ground for germs
  • Expel your urine completely and keep your bladder clean
  • If you have the urge to pee, just pee
  • Avoid foreign products in your vagina, they cause pH imbalance and can attract infections
